A few words about Pinot Noir 2017 from Winnica Pod Lipą winery in a form of a tasting note. I am presenting you one of dry red wines from Górzykowo.
It was a hot summer evening 2019. It was getting dark slowly in one of agrotourisms placed by one of lakes in Bory Tucholskie. It was the last stop of my holidays trip last year. A few days earlier, when I was in Górzykowo, near Zielona Góra, i bought a few bottles of wine from that region, one of the wineries was called Winnica Pod Lipą. That particular evening, with my girlfriend we decided to try one of them. Our choice was Regent from 2018 from Winnica Pod Lipą winery. I must admit, that till that evening, my experience with Polish dry red wines was not too good. To each of such wines I had a lot of distance. Till that moment I haven’t tried yet any I could describe as good or very good. That evening, when I was contemplating the moonlight and starry sky over perfectly smooth lake surface, hearing frogs concert, everything changed… Regent from Winnica Pod Lipą winery was truly very good. It had perfect aroma of dark and red fruits, supported by few other tones I am not able to remind now. But in general it changed my perception of dry red wines from Polish vineyards.
A few days ago, on one of cold February evenings I was contemplating my memories from those holidays with my girlfriend. While sitting by the fireplace, we decided, that a glass of wine would be a perfect companion during our talk about last year summer. We chose Pinot Noir 2017 from Winnica Pod Lipą winery. It was dry red wine from Górzykowo near Zielona Góra with 12% of alcohol. Keeping in mind my experience with previous wine from that winery, I had opened it and poured to our glasses.
The color of this wine was intensively raspberry. The glitter was medium, but the tears were dense, flowing down very slowly. Clarity was high.
In aroma I could feel cherries, strawberry and other red fruits, a slight tone of tanned leather, delicate tones of wood and some cinnamon, which was getting stronger after a while. The aroma was moderately intense, however the balance was kept pretty well; there was no mark of alcohol in the nose. Aroma durability was also on high level, even after a few minutes it was still intense and with no changes in character.
To the foreground of the taste came out strawberry and stronger tones of wild strawberry. Wine had high acidity, almost at the edge of pleasure. At this moment I want to emphasize one fact – the level of acidity, that can be treated as acceptable is very personal issue. I consider mine as a pretty high, but I know some people (as a matter of fact a lot of people), who would say that the level of acidity in this wine was too high. However in my opinion the aroma was richer than the taste. I wouldn’t say, that the taste was raw, but it was pretty poor comparing to the aroma. There was also some additional tone of spice of pepper, but it wasn’t too balanced either. Generally the balance of the taste was not maintained too well, there was a lack of harmony between particular parts of the bouquet.
This wine was honest, there was no mark of shallowness, alcohol was hidden very well and with good balance. I just have some doubts about the age of this wine – maybe 3 or 4 years in a bottle would give it enough time to gather harmony and character.
The attack was smooth, but not watery. The body was also smooth, but with some sharper elements. The tannins were manifesting in the body pretty strong. Finish was medium long, but very pleasurable. Tannins were generally pretty intense, at the end almost insistent. Sweetness was low, with tones of strawberry and wild strawberry; the acidity was high.
The main question for summary: is this a good wine? Short answer: it’s OK. Let me explain, why… It is obvious, that there is a lack of balance in this wine, but on the other hand, I enjoyed drinking it. Comming to it with some relax and no higher expectations, we can experience a lot of fun and pleasure. Is this wine worth recommendation? Well… I have some doubts about that… If someone would ask me about that Regent – it would be obvious and short answer – take and do not think, although you are considering taking two, three or four bottles. But about Pinot Noir – well, it would be not too good choice if you wish to get known with this grape variety. But this wine gains a lot, when you think of it as an example of Polish dry red wine – it turns to be pretty good comparing to other Polish red dry wines. Personally I am curious, what else the Winnica Pod Lipą has to offer…
